Publications

Our research is published in peer-reviewed journals. We make our work as accessible as we can. Publicly funded research should be available to the public.

Below, you’ll find selected publications from the I-TRIP Lab. Each one has a summary. No subscription or PhD required.

Merriwether EN, Vanegas SM, Curado S, Zhou B, Mun CJ, Younger OS, Elbel B, Parikh M, Jay M. “Changes in Widespread Pain After Surgical Weight Loss in Racialized Adults: A Secondary Analysis From a 2-Year Longitudinal Study.” The Journal of Pain. November 2024;25(11):104625.

Summary

Three out of four adults with obesity experience widespread pain. In Black and Hispanic/Latino adults, rates are even higher. This study tracked how pain and movement changed after bariatric surgery over two years. Surgery helped overall. But gaps in outcomes remain. More targeted care is needed.

Merriwether EN, Wittleder S, Cho G, Bogan E, Thomas R, Bostwick N, Wang B, Ravenell J, Jay M. “Racial and Weight Discrimination Associations with Pain Intensity and Pain Interference in an Ethnically Diverse Sample of Adults with Obesity: A Baseline Analysis of the GEM Study.” BMC Public Health. December 2021;21(1):2201.

Summary

Racial and weight discrimination show up in the body as physical pain. This study found strong links between discrimination and pain levels in diverse adults. Social context must be part of pain care.

Letzen JE, Mathur VA, Janevic MR, Burton MD, Hood AM, Morais CA, Booker SQ, Campbell CM, Aroke EN, Goodin BR, Campbell LC, Merriwether EN. “Confronting Racism in All Forms of Pain Research: Reframing Study Designs.” The Journal of Pain. June 2022;23(6):893-912.

Summary

Racism shapes pain research in ways most people don’t see. Who gets recruited. What gets measured. What questions get asked. This paper, from the ACTION-PR coalition, offers a roadmap for doing better. Dr. Merriwether is a member of ACTION-PR.

Merriwether EN, Agalave NM, Dailey DL, et al. “IL-5 Mediates Monocyte Phenotype and Pain Outcomes in Fibromyalgia.” Pain. 2021.

Summary

Fibromyalgia causes widespread chronic pain. This study looked at how a specific immune protein (IL-5) and white blood cells (monocytes) may play a role in that pain. Understanding this could lead to new treatment options.
